Important IB Program Info for the Class of 2027

Walnut High School is pleased to be completing its 24th year as an International Baccalaureate school.  We continue to be one of the most successful IB schools in California.  Students from our IB Diploma program have been accepted to Yale, Stanford, Princeton, MIT, Northwestern, Brown, Harvard, Purdue, Pomona College, Johns Hopkins, Rice, and large numbers to UCLA, Berkeley and other UC schools. We are extremely proud of our graduates; many have reported how well the program prepared them for the universities they are now attending.

The International Baccalaureate Program is a comprehensive pre-university course of study for the highly motivated secondary student, and is the most rigorous academic program offered at Walnut High. The emphasis of the IB program is the education of the “whole person”.  The IB program provides students with the intellectual, social, and critical thinking perspectives necessary for the adult world that lies ahead.   The reputation for the rigorous assessment associated with the program gives the IB diploma holder access to the world’s leading universities and a solid preparation for high achievement once enrolled.

Students entering the International Baccalaureate program will be enrolled in the Walnut High School pre-IB honors courses during their 9th and 10th grade years, followed by the IB Diploma courses during their 11th and 12th grade years.

Incoming 9th graders wishing to apply for the Walnut High School Pre-IB program to prepare for the International Baccalaureate program must meet the following requirements:

  • 3.00 GPA in core academic courses (math, science, English, social studies) in the 8th grade
  • Completed Algebra I or Geometry before enrollment at Walnut High School
  • Maintained regular school attendance
  • Demonstrated an intellectual curiosity and dedicated work ethic

We encourage you and your child to view the presentation for the IB Diploma Program for 8th grade students and parents to learn more about the IB Diploma program.  You can view the same presentation in either of the following ways:

Students can apply for the WHS pre-IB program by visiting the WHS IB homepage on the Walnut High School website (walnuths.net – click “Academics” and then select “IBDP/IBCP”).  You can also access a link to our list of Frequently Asked Questions about the IB from the WHS IB homepage.

We also want to encourage you to attend the Walnut High School Open House on February 2 from 6:00 – 8:00pm.  Please be sure to stop by the International Baccalaureate booth in the gym to ask questions and learn more about both our IB Diploma Program and our IB Career-Related Program.
